The Best Time of Year for a New Zealand Heli Elopement
There is no bad month to fly in the Southern Lakes, but there is a best month for what you personally want. Snow underfoot, the softest light, the longest day and the most settled weather do not all tend to arrive at the same time.

Autumn is the one we recommend most
March to May gives the calmest air of the year, low golden light through the middle of the day, and enough daylight for a full-day plan without rushing. It is also the window that fills first, so if autumn is what you want, ask about your date as early as you can.
Winter if you want snow in the photographs
June to August is the only reliable way to stand in deep snow at accessible altitudes. The trade is short days and more movement in the forecast — a winter elopement wants a buffer day either side and a willingness to fly at whatever hour the weather offers.
When winter is clear, it is the most dramatic flying we do all year.
Summer for long days and warm evenings
December to February gives you light until late, which suits couples who want a full day with several landings and a slow evening afterwards. Snow sits high, so if you want it underfoot we plan for altitude rather than for the calendar.
Spring for green valleys under white tops
September to November holds snow on the summits while the valleys turn green — the widest visual contrast of the year in a single flight. Conditions move quickly, so we carry more backup sites than usual.
How far ahead to book
- Autumn (Mar–May): as far ahead as you can, often 9–12 months.
- Summer (Dec–Feb): 6–9 months, longer over the holidays.
- Spring (Sep–Nov): 4–6 months is usually comfortable.
- Winter (Jun–Aug): the most flexible, and shorter notice is often fine.
Time of day matters more than most couples expect
Morning air in the Southern Lakes is typically more settled than afternoon air, whatever the season. Most of our ceremonies happen in the first half of the day for that reason, with portraits carried into the light as it softens.
