Queenstown Elopements by Helicopter

All-inclusive alpine elopements flown from Queenstown — ceremony, celebrant, photography and film, planned around your date and the weather.

Why elope in Queenstown

Queenstown is the most practical place in New Zealand to elope into the mountains. The landscape starts where the town ends, and everything you need for the day sits within a few minutes of the lakefront.

Twenty minutes to the alpine
Queenstown sits directly beneath the Remarkables and Cecil Peak. From lift-off, snow-covered ridgelines and hanging valleys are minutes away, which means more time on the mountain and less time in transit.
An international airport in town
Queenstown Airport is approximately 8 km from central Queenstown, with direct flights from across Australia and connections from everywhere else. For couples travelling in, Queenstown removes an entire day of internal travel.
Somewhere to be afterwards
Lakeside restaurants, wineries in Gibbston, and a long list of places to stay mean the rest of the day looks after itself once you land back in town.
Weather options in every direction
Flying out of Queenstown gives our pilots several distinct weather systems to choose between. When one valley is closed in, another can be flyable — often useful for a date that cannot move, though nothing about alpine weather is guaranteed.

How a Queenstown day runs

A typical timeline, adjusted each time around light, wind and where the day's clearest weather sits.

  1. Morning

Hair, makeup and getting ready wherever you are staying. We photograph quietly through it if you would like those moments covered.

  2. Midday

Meet at the Queenstown heliport for a short safety briefing, then lift off over Lake Wakatipu with your celebrant on board.

  3. First landing

Your ceremony, somewhere with no one else in it — a ridgeline, a snowfield or a lake terrace chosen to suit the day's conditions.

  4. Second and third landings

Portraits in genuinely different country. Full-day packages add further landings so the day covers snow, rock and water rather than one look.

  5. Late afternoon

Champagne on the mountain, then back to Queenstown in time for dinner. You keep the rest of the evening entirely to yourselves.

Where you can land near Queenstown

Four of the areas we fly to most often from the Queenstown heliport. The final choice is made on the day, once the pilot has read the conditions.

  • The Remarkables

The range Queenstown is known for. Sharp rock, deep winter snow and the shortest flight of any of our options.

  • Cecil Peak & Walter Peak

Directly across Lake Wakatipu, with tussock shoulders and long lake views straight back over town.

  • Mt Crichton & the Wakatipu Basin

Sheltered alpine clearings and beech forest edges — a strong option when the tops are windy.

  • Earnslaw Burn

Hanging glaciers and waterfalls at the head of the valley. Weather-dependent, and unlike anywhere else we fly.

What your Queenstown elopement includes

Helicopter flights and alpine landings, celebrant booking, photography and film coverage, weather monitoring with pre-selected backup locations, and the planning that holds it all together — arranged by one team rather than five suppliers.

Planning the trip

Arrive two days before your date if you can. It absorbs delayed flights, gives you time to settle, and leaves room to move the elopement by a day if the mountains ask for it. Marriage licences are applied for online and must be arranged at least three working days before the ceremony.

Full legal detail for overseas couples is on our New Zealand elopement guide.

Queenstown elopement questions

It depends on your package, total flight time, how many landings you want and the season. We quote each date individually and itemise every inclusion, so you can see exactly what the helicopter, celebrant, photography and film each contribute to the figure.

A half-day Queenstown elopement usually runs three to four hours from heliport to return. A full day runs six to eight hours and covers several landings with time to slow down at each one.

Flights depart from the Queenstown heliport, a few minutes from the town centre. We confirm the exact meeting point and time the day before, once the final weather picture is in.

March to May gives the most settled flying conditions and the best light of the year. December to February brings the longest days, and June to August gives real snow with more weather flexibility required.

Yes, within helicopter capacity and the limits of the landing site. Tell us how many people you would like with you and we will plan the aircraft configuration around it.

We watch the forecast in the days beforehand and hold backup locations and, where needed, a backup window. If the pilot calls it unsafe, we move the plan rather than take the risk.

We do. Wānaka is quieter and closer to Mt Aspiring National Park, and it reaches much of the same alpine country. Queenstown remains the easier base if you are flying in from overseas.

We recommend arriving at least two days before your date. It gives you a buffer for delayed flights, time to adjust, and the option to shift the elopement a day if weather requires it.
