Planning a New Zealand Elopement From Overseas: 2026/27 Guide
By the Heli Elopements Planning Team · Published

Planning a New Zealand elopement from another country can feel surprisingly simple at first: choose the mountains, book a flight and come to New Zealand.
The parts that actually deserve attention happen around the wedding day.
When should you apply for your marriage licence? Do you need a visa or NZeTA? Who can be your witnesses if you are travelling alone? How many days before the wedding should you arrive? What happens if alpine weather changes your helicopter plan? And after you are married, will you need a New Zealand marriage certificate or an apostille when you return home?
This guide brings those pieces together for couples travelling to New Zealand for an elopement in Queenstown, Wānaka and the Southern Alps. For the wider picture of where and how, see our New Zealand elopement page.
The legal and immigration information below has been checked against current New Zealand Government sources. The helicopter planning advice comes from how we plan real alpine elopements here.
Last verified: 3 October 2026. Legal and travel information checked against New Zealand Government, Immigration New Zealand and official New Zealand travel sources.
Government requirements can change. Always confirm current legal and entry requirements with the relevant New Zealand authority before travelling. Heli Elopements does not give legal or immigration advice.
The short version for overseas couples
- Yes, overseas visitors can marry in New Zealand.
- For a personalised legal ceremony you need a New Zealand marriage licence, a registered marriage celebrant and two witnesses.
- The current licence fee is NZ$158, and you can apply online while still overseas.
- Arrange the licence at least three working days before the ceremony. It expires after three months.
- Permission to enter New Zealand is separate. Depending on your passport you may need a visa or NZeTA.
- Everyone travelling into New Zealand must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration.
- Our planning recommendation: arrive around two days before the wedding if possible, for breathing room around delayed travel and mountain weather.
- The document you receive on the day is not necessarily the official certificate you may need overseas. A certificate is ordered separately, and some countries also require an apostille, authentication or translation.

Can overseas visitors legally get married in New Zealand?
Yes. You do not need to move to New Zealand or become a New Zealand citizen before holding a legal wedding here.
For most destination elopements, the relevant option is a personalised ceremony conducted by a registered New Zealand marriage celebrant.
The legal process is intentionally straightforward, but the marriage process and your immigration status are two separate things. A marriage licence gives you permission to marry. A visa or NZeTA gives you permission to travel to or enter New Zealand. Having one does not replace the other.

The New Zealand marriage licence: what overseas couples actually need to know
Six things, in the order you will meet them.
- 01
Apply online
One of you can complete the application using information about both partners. The New Zealand Government application can be made whether you are in New Zealand or overseas.
- 02
Allow at least three working days
The licence must be arranged at least three working days before the ceremony. That is a minimum notice period, not a promised processing time.
- 03
Current fee: NZ$158
The marriage licence currently costs NZ$158. Celebrants charge separately. Verified October 2026. Fees can change.
- 04
Remember the three-month expiry
A New Zealand marriage licence expires after three months, so do not apply so early that it lapses before your ceremony.
- 05
Choose a registered celebrant
Only a registered New Zealand marriage celebrant can legally perform a personalised ceremony. Celebrant planning is part of our packages where stated on that page.
- 06
Arrange two witnesses
Two witnesses are required. Government guidance says they do not need to have known you for any set length of time, but they must understand what is happening, be able to identify you and understand that you both consent. If you are travelling without guests, tell us early so witnesses are part of the plan.

Important for helicopter weddings: your ceremony location and backup plan
When you apply for a personalised marriage licence, the intended ceremony location matters.
Government guidance recommends including your chosen ceremony location and a backup location in the application where relevant. That matters for an alpine wedding, because weather can affect which helicopter landing is usable.
There is also an important safeguard: official guidance for celebrants says that if unforeseen circumstances require the ceremony location to change, the ceremony can still move to another location within New Zealand, provided the celebrant records the actual location correctly on the marriage documents.
For a helicopter elopement, do not manage this yourself on the morning of the wedding. Coordinate any location change with your celebrant and planning team.
Government requirements and interpretation should always be confirmed with Births, Deaths and Marriages and your registered celebrant.

Your marriage licence is not your permission to enter New Zealand
Marriage paperwork and New Zealand border requirements are separate systems.
Before booking international travel, check your passport against Immigration New Zealand's current visa and NZeTA requirements. Some travellers can visit using an NZeTA. Others need a Visitor Visa.
Australian citizens travelling on an Australian passport do not normally need either a Visitor Visa or an NZeTA. Australian permanent residents normally require an NZeTA.
Passport and entry rules can change, so do not rely on a wedding blog, including this one, as your final immigration check.

2026 visitor-visa update
From 24 September 2026, Immigration New Zealand moved new applications for most visitor visas exclusively to its enhanced Immigration Online system. If you need a Visitor Visa, use the current process rather than old screenshots or instructions in older travel blogs.

Do not forget the New Zealand Traveller Declaration
Every traveller entering New Zealand must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration. It is free, and each traveller needs one, including children.
For travellers arriving by air, the digital declaration can generally be submitted from 24 hours before the journey to New Zealand begins. It covers travel, customs, immigration and biosecurity information and is linked to your passport.
This is separate again from your marriage licence and your visa or NZeTA.

Heli Elopements planning recommendation
Arrive around two days before your elopement if you can. That is not a legal requirement. It is a planning buffer.
It gives you time to absorb a delayed international flight, settle into the time zone, confirm the final timeline and, importantly for a helicopter wedding, keep some flexibility around alpine conditions.
Flying halfway around the world and scheduling your ceremony immediately after arrival removes options exactly when you want more of them. For couples travelling long-haul from North America, Europe or Asia, extra recovery time may also make the day itself far more enjoyable. We give the same advice on our Queenstown and Wānaka pages.
Getting to Queenstown and Wānaka in 2026/27
Queenstown
Queenstown has an international airport and is normally the simplest Southern Lakes base for overseas couples. From June 2026, Air New Zealand and Jetstar added seasonal direct services between Brisbane and Queenstown, expanding direct trans-Tasman access. Schedules change seasonally, so check current flights with the airlines or Queenstown Airport before booking.
Wānaka
Most international couples staying in Wānaka arrive through Queenstown Airport and continue by road. Official Wānaka tourism guidance gives roughly 1 hour via the Crown Range Road or 1 hour 15 minutes via Cromwell. The Crown Range is an alpine road and winter conditions can affect it.
Do not schedule an international arrival, a tight mountain transfer and a wedding ceremony as one continuous plan.

Queenstown or Wānaka: choose the trip before choosing the mountain
For overseas couples, the decision between Queenstown and Wānaka is not simply about which mountain photograph you prefer.
Queenstown usually wins on convenience. You can land at the international airport, reach accommodation quickly and keep restaurants, transport and wedding suppliers close together.
Wānaka offers a slower base and immediate access to the Mt Aspiring side of the Southern Alps, but most international visitors still reach it via Queenstown Airport and continue by road.
The good news is that your accommodation base does not necessarily lock the helicopter into one side of the region. Depending on weather, aircraft planning and the final route, we can plan around the conditions rather than forcing one predetermined mountain to work.
